The Teaching Council has the power to impose sanctions or strike off teachers GETTY IMAGESThe first ever public inquiry into a teacher’s fitness to practise will be held today, 16 years after legislation to enable such hearings was first enacted. The two-day disciplinary hearing against the unnamed teacher will be held at the headquarters of the Teaching Council in Maynooth, Co Kildare. No details of the case or the nature of the complaint against the teacher have been made available before the hearing. It is scheduled to be held in public but the identity of the teacher will not be disclosed. It is possible that an application may be made for the entire proceedings to be heard in private.
