University of Canterbury hires first non-Christian chaplain

Ibrahim Abdelhalim is the new Muslim Chaplain at the University of Canterbury. A former voluntary imam at Christchurch's Linwood mosque has become the University of Canterbury’s (UC) first Muslim chaplain. Chaplains provide pastoral and spiritual support for students and staff on campus, advise the university on matters related to faith, and promote connections with other faiths and the wider Canterbury community. He had delivered a sermon and was praying at the front of the Linwood mosque when the gunman attacked. His wife, Salwa El-Shazly, was shot in the arm while reaching out to help friend and victim Linda Armstrong.
