In a blow to President Trump, Robert Mueller, a former FBI director, was put in charge of the inquiry. Calls for an independent investigator had increased sharply after Mr Trump sacked James Comey as FBI director last week. The president was alleged to be trying to intervene in a bureau investigation into his former national security adviser. Mr Mueller, 72, who led the FBI from 2001-13, was appointed by Rod Rosenstein, deputy attorney-general.
