Anand, a well known lawyer, suffered a humiliating loss as election officials invalidated Congress votes on grounds such as using the wrong pen to tick their choice. BJP's Bheemtal MLA Daan Singh Bhandari abstained from voting and resigned from the assembly hours before voting for the RS seat began. As two Congress MLAs did not vote, MoS for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Naqvi got 29 votes and sailed through. Seetharaman, Ramesh, Fernandes and K C Ramamurthy (Congress) were elected from Karnataka.Apart from Akbar, BJP veteran Anil Dave won from Madhya Pradesh. BJP's hopes of the independent backed by the party making a dent in the Congress-PDF combine came a cropper.
