Teams around the world are leading clinical trials to see if the vaccine can help people to fight off Covid-19, by boosting their immune system. While the vaccine is intended to raise immune responses to the TB bacterium, studies have shown that the BCG may also increase the ability of the immune system to fight off other pathogens. A team from UMC Utrecht will kick off the first of the trials this week, testing the vaccine on 1,000 healthcare workers in eight hospitals. “We aim to enroll 4000 healthcare workers from hospitals around Australia to allow us to accurately say whether it can lessen the severity of Covid-19 symptoms.
