Trinamul opposes MP pay hike

File pictureNew Delhi: The Trinamul Congress has opposed the salary hike for MPs that finance minister Arun Jaitley announced in his budget speech on Thursday. Trinamul Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien told reporters on Friday that Mamata Banerjee had decided to oppose the pay hike after consulting the party's House leaders. Trinamul will therefore resist the proposed amendment to the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954. The amendment will look to double the MPs' current monthly salary of Rs 50,000 and raise former MPs' pension from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 a month.
