Toyota joins rivals in trumpeting US expansions with $826m project

Toyota joins rivals in trumpeting US expansions with $826m projectNZPA Toyota's decision to highlight a plant expansion is in line with the new normal in the automotive industry: emphasising American manufacturing investments as US President Donald Trump threatens a border tax for importing vehicles from Mexico to the US. Following criticism from Trump over its investments in Mexico, Toyota said that it would add 400 jobs at the Indiana plant to bolster production capacity for the Highlander sport-utility vehicle. The Indiana investment is part of a US$10 billion, 5-year US spending plan announced by Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda at the Detroit auto show in January. Like its US counterparts, Toyota has been the target of criticism by Trump for manufacturing vehicles in Mexico and selling them in the US. The new Mexico plant will employ about 2000 workers and make 200,000 vehicles annually.
