Tonnes of used items donated for evacuees in Edmonton will end up at Goodwill, Salvation Army

At one point, volunteers were turning away people looking to donate used items simply because they did not have the space to store them. The Salvation Army maintains they will not be accepting any used donations, but said Monday they may be able to give some items to thrift stores throughout Alberta, depending on the volume. That’s because an estimated one-third of the items being donated to the 71,000-sq-ft Edmonton Emergency Relief Services Society (EERSS) Donation Centre are used and volunteers have no way of ensuring cleanliness. Space that could otherwise be used for more pertinent, vital items like new diapers, pillows and bedding, pet food and toiletries. “Even if people come in and say that they’ve dry-cleaned it, we can’t give it out.”RelatedAnd it’s not just used clothes being donated.
