Dr. Perry said the Canadian icon’s diagnosis, while sad, offers an “unprecedented” opportunity to raise awareness. “Gord has a primary brain tumour, this is one that started from within the brain itself; it’s not cancer that spread from another part of the body,” Dr. Perry said. Downie was diagnosed in December with glioblastoma, a cancerous form of brain tumour, but kept it quiet as he underwent surgery followed by six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy.
