The world must put an end to the violence

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s appeal to the UN to end the Rohingya crisis has not fallen on deaf ears. Seven countries, including three major western powers — France, Britain, and the United States, are throwing their weight behind the issue by meeting with the UN Security Council next week and discussing possible courses of action. It is also encouraging to see various world leaders like France’s President Emmanuel Macron coming forward boldly to denounce Myanmar’s military campaign in strong words. We hope that the Security Council will take firm and effective steps to stop the violence immediately and put an end to the unspeakable sufferings of over a million Rohingyas. While the Council’s most pressing task right now is to end the ongoing violence, it is imperative that the international community does not let Myanmar off the hook afterwards.
