Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,300-year-old mummy named after the Alpine mountain range where he was found, remains one of the most well-preserved ancient bodies since a pair of hikers discovered him in 1991. Clues about the iceman’s ancestry, his diet, and his ailing health have all been thoroughly studied over the past 25 years. O’Sullivan says he was also shocked at the results of the analysis of one of Ötzi’s most important accessories — his quiver. “One surprise was the presence of roe deer in the quiver, a species never seen before in the iceman assemblage,” he said. The discovery of both domestic and wild animals in the iceman’s clothing paints a picture of what life was like in 5,000 B.C.
