The assembly elections were canceled due to the death of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Kooner on November 15. On 30 December, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) included Singh in the Council of Ministers soon after the victory. With this move, Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) alleging violation of the code of conduct. Opposition party Congress named Rupinder Singh Kooner, son of Gurmeet Singh Kooner, as its new candidate for the elections held on January 5. Cooner, a three-time MLA, has handled various departments as a state minister.
