AFP via Getty ImagesTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company made waves in the U.S. on Friday, when it announced plans to build a new $12 billion factory in Arizona that will create some 1,600 high-tech jobs and produce more than 20,000 semiconductor wafers a month. His idea eventually spurred Taiwan’s rise as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing, and TSMC became the world’s biggest contract semiconductor producer. Still headquartered in Taiwan, the company now produces over 12 million semiconductor wafers a year for some 500 customers, and employs over 51,000 people. Its rising share price landed Chang on Forbes’ list of Taiwan’s 50 Richest in 2017 with a $930 million net worth. The firm now boasts over $35 billion in annual sales and more than $250 billion in market capitalization.
