The chicken wing might as well be the official Super Bowl mascot. Americans are expected to eat 1.35 billion wings over Super Bowl weekend this year – more than ever before – according to the National Chicken Council’s (NCC) annual Chicken Wing Report. “Chicken wings are at their highest demand level in history and will continue like that for the foreseeable future.”Once considered a secondary cut, wings are now the most valuable part of the chicken, according to Bonnie Riggs, restaurant industry analyst at NPD Group. Bone-in wings are in highest demand, with 60 per cent of consumers choosing them over boneless, which are actually balls of breast meat. Naked came in last, with only 8 per cent of Americans saying they prefer wings au naturel.
