Tesco boss Charles Wilson steps down, proud of Booker legacy

The retail industry veteran Charles Wilson is to retire from Tesco to “take things a little easier” two years after he was diagnosed with throat cancer. The highly-regarded businessman has led Booker, the wholesale business that Tesco bought for £4 billion in 2018, for 15 years and plans to leave in February. He had been considered a potential future group chief executive of Tesco, Britain’s biggest grocer, and had briefly been promoted to head its UK and Ireland business after the acquisition. However, he stepped back from the role in 2018 to focus on the Booker wholesale business while he recuperated from cancer. Mr Wilson, 55, said yesterday that he remained in remission but now was the time to exit.
