Southland Medical Foundation supports bowel cancer research projectSupplied University of Otago Department of Pathology research fellow Dr Nicholas FlemingA research project funded in part by the Southland Medical Foundation is trying to determine why bowel cancer is proving so deadly in the south. Bowel cancer present particular challenges to Southland, with an unusually high incidence paired with a higher than average rate of fatality as well. With other research focussed on identifying the cause of the high incidence of bowel cancer, Fleming's research is focussed on why the cancer seems to be especially fatal in the south. Southland Medical Foundation board member Norman Maclean said that the foundation was putting considerable funding into research surrounding bowel cancer. "We're very confident that they can progress our understanding of bowel cancer in the south," he said.
