Canterbury Weather Updates has warned that the weekend's hot weather could be the hottest weekend we could get even during summer. South Canterbury, and in particular Geraldine, sizzled over the weekend, recording one of New Zealand's highest-ever November temperatures. On Sunday, the hot temperatures continued, with Geraldine recording 30 degrees, Twizel 30.3, Timaru 29.5, Waimate 29.6, Lake Tekapo 26.4, and Aoraki/Mt Cook Village 26.3. According to the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa)'s climate summary for the November to January period, temperatures in Coastal Canterbury are about equally likely to be near average (35 per cent chance) or above average (40 per cent chance). Rainfall totals are also about equally likely to be near normal (40 per cent chance) or above normal (35 per cent chance).
