A young Invercargill couple have been wanting to buy a house for a year and it doesn't look like their wait will end any time soon. Daniel Kent and Tarryn McLeod are, like many others in the province, trying to buy a home in amongst a housing shortage. Southland Real Estate sales manager Graeme Hegan said Invercargill's population of about 55,000 had been increasing by 1000 a year for the last five years. Now, about about 120 houses are selling a month, while a month ago Invercargill real estate companies together held between 230 and 250 properties, Hegan said. Hegan believe if housing development areas were created for first-home buyers, in the $360,000 to $420,000 price range, it would be a big help.
