New car sales in Ireland are down by 15 per cent over the past two years GETTY IMAGESA lobby group for the Irish motor industry has warned that Brexit could cause an industry collapse on a scale not experienced since the recession. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry yesterday called for the state to step up its preparations to help the car industry to deal with the potential fallout of a no-deal Brexit. The sector has been suffering since Brexit became a reality. The value of sterling dropped sharply after the UK voted to leave the EU in 2016 and has remained relatively low since. This has made it much cheaper for consumers to buy second-hand cars sourced from the UK, which in turn has led to a sharp drop in the number of new car sales.
