The Times view on the US-China trade war: tit-for-tat arrests could soon have global consequences

Pity Canada. No sooner does it accede to President Trump’s demand for a renegotiation of its free-trade deal with America than it finds itself caught in the crossfire of Washington’s trade war with China. Two Canadian citizens have been arrested by Chinese security services on suspicion of harming China’s national security. There is little doubt that this was in retaliation for the arrest in Canada last week of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Chinese technology company Huawei. She was detained after a US request for her extradition to face charges of violating sanctions against Iran.
