Small fires keep firefighters busy on Christmas EveSeveral small fires kept Southland firefighters busy on Christmas Eve. A fire communications spokesman said the first call came in just after 1.30pm when Colac Bay firefighters were called were called to a small grass fire. When firefighters arrived they found the small fire near a power pole which firefighters were able to easily extinguish, the spokesman said. Invercargill firefighters were also called to a tractor fire at a property on Oreti Rd near Erskine Rd just after 5pm. When firefighters arrived they found the fire had basically extinguished itself and so they dampened down the tractor and the area around it, the spokesman said.
