The UK is home to more than 110,000 people from Hong Kong with almost a quarter of them living in the capital. Long historical links with the former colony, where the English language has official status, have made Britain an attractive destination for Hong Kong emigrants. There were 111,700 residents who were born in Hong Kong living in the UK at the time of the last census in 2011. The vast majority, 99,000, were living in England, 7,000 were in Scotland, 3,500 in Wales and 1,900 in Northern Ireland. Unlike other diaspora communities, migrants from Hong Kong tend to be more geographically dispersed although their numbers are more concentrated in London and the southeast.
