The national government should set up training institutions to boost skills in the fishing industry, Kisumu woman representative Rose Nyamunga has said. “Inadequate training and inadequate fish processing facilities has led to poor earnings among many Kenyans who depend on fishing,” she told the MPs. Nyamunga said despite fishing being a lucrative business, lack of skills has turned it into a ‘jua kali’ business, especially at the Coast and in Nyanza. She gave a notice of motion yesterday in Parliament, saying this will ensure “fishing communities maximise their returns”.
