Senate votes to keep oil tanker ban alive, potentially ending defiant streak in upper chamber as C-69 decision looms

The Senate energy committee recommended 188 changes to Bill C-69 that, if accepted, would represent the most Senate amendments ever proposed for a piece of government legislation since at least 1940. The current record of 158 proposed amendments was set in 2006 on Bill C-2, the Federal Accountability Act. Bill C-69 is expected to pass third reading late Thursday or early next week. The Independent Senators Groups, for its part, put forward a number of amendments on behalf of Environment Canada. Bill C-69 has been broadly supported by a number of industry associations, including the Mining Association of Canada, who also forward proposed amendments.
