In the short run, Ford’s decision to take on the public sector unions may play well politically for the PCs. There’s not much sympathy out there for teachers and other public sector workers, many of whom enjoy better pensions and benefits than their private-sector counterparts. On the face of it, a 1 per cent wage hike might not seem that bad, particularly to those getting less. The fact that public sector workers have already borne much of the brunt of government austerity policies is liable to be ignored. But there are many actions short of a general strike that would allow Ontario workers to express their displeasure with the Ford regime.
