The national security law has played an important role in safeguarding the SAR’s social order, police commissioner Chris Tang Ping-keung said. Tang refuted the idea that the new law has undermined the personal freedom of citizens, despite different countries have openly slammed Beijing for enacting the law. “The law states that the principle of the rule of law is based on preventing, suppressing and imposing punishment for offenses that endanger national security,” he said. “The police force is confident in handling various challenges from now on, and will protect Hong Kong’s social order and national security,” he said. The new law targets secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with a foreign country or external forces.
