Researchers claim they’ve taken a ‘significant step’ towards bringing the huge animals back from the dead. They then sequenced the mammoth’s DNA, before injecting cell nuclei from the muscle tissue into mouse cells. (Image: bbc)According to the study, published in Scientific Reports , this resulted in signs of biological activity, including a structural formation that precedes cell division. While the researchers explained that there’s ‘still a long way to go’ before this process can result in a full woolly mammoth, they describe it as a ‘significant step,’ according to Nikkei. Russian scientists are also attempting to clone a woolly mammoth, using a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer.
