"The court directed that the terms and conditions of service of members of the National Green Tribunal shall be governed by the provisions of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010," the representative wrote to The Telegraph on Saturday. Under the original act, a retired high court or Supreme Court judge could be appointed the NGT chief. "But the fact remains that most of the green tribunals in the country are now non-functional in the absence of judicial and technical members," he said. "As environmental issues need to be addressed immediately, the Supreme Court should see that these vacancies are filled up soon."
