When Lisa McInerney’s first novel The Glorious Heresies was published, there was a lot of talk about it being a “masculine” novel. Simply put, The Rules of Revelation is the story of five people all loosely connected. One of the young people, Ryan Cusack, is a former juvenile delinquent/drug dealer turned singer/songwriter. He’s been abroad, but has come back home to record an album with a band he’s formed – Lord Urchin. The characters are all from a disadvantaged background, one that McInerney knows well, thus ensuring they’re never stereotypes or caricatures.
