Return 50% of GST to states, Govt urged - Nation

GEORGE TOWN: The Federal Government should return 50% of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collected from each state to the respective states, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. He said Penangites contributed RM5.56bil of GST between 2015 and October this year, but not a single sen was returned to the state. “To return 50% of the GST is reasonable because in Australia, all the GST contributed would be refunded 100% to the respective states by its government,” he said in a press statement yesterday. Although Penang had contributed a big amount to the GST, Lim questioned why there was no financial aid given to the state during the Nov 4 and 5 floods. “Out of the RM235mil financial aid given to flood victims throughout the country from 2013 to 2017, Penang got only RM35,500 or 0.015%,” he said.
