Rethink after Bhangar flare-up

Calcutta, Jan. 17: The Mamata Banerjee government has decided to relocate a power substation from Bhangar in South 24-Parganas after land-acquisition protests turned violent and one person died. The flare-up and Nandigram-style blockade of roads with tree trunks at the doorstep of Calcutta are a cause for concern for multiple reasons. Two, the land was being acquired through direct purchase by the public sector company. Direct purchase has been projected as the pill to cure all problems associated with land acquisition. Three, the substation project was 75 per cent complete.
