My friends in the Asia Foundation (AF) have recently asked me to join in developing a paper on the need for Reskilling and Upskilling. We called the online forum “Catching FIRe: Adapting to the Future of Work through Reskilling and Upskilling.” The AF paper has the same title. Without saying the obvious, technology will choose which businessmen will have a business, and which employees will have a job. In 2017, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) estimated that 35% of occupations in the Philippines could be affected by automation. While companies offer opportunities for reskilling and upskilling, the onus for development ultimately rests with the individual.
