Report on missing, murdered Indigenous women calls for significant change to police services across Canada

Alongside politics and history, culture and race, the alarming accounts of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls is also a crime story, and Monday’s release of the final report of a national inquiry with moving stories from victims across Canada highlighted the violence. As such, many of the report’s recommendations — or, perhaps more accurately, demands — focus on policing and the police response to investigating and handling reports and cases of missing and murdered women over years. The changes would impact both the RCMP, as the national force, as well as provincial and municipal police services. “We are carefully reviewing the report by the National Inquiry and its recommendations,” said Scott Bardsley, a spokesman for Goodale. She said investigators continue to review files of missing and murdered women.
