Since its launch in 1989, the SkyDome has always been “revolutionary,” as artistic director Roland Kirouac told the Star’s Frances Kelly at its launch. It was the world’s first stadium with a fully retractable roof. “This is part of history and I wanted to be part of it,” he said at the time. “It’s pretty exciting.”The elaborate opening saw a 90-minute program that snapped up every available spotlight on the northeastern seaboard and climaxed with a brilliant burst of fireworks and the release of 30,000 balloons, Kelly wrote at the time. As the Star’s Robert Brehl reported, when the roof opened the rain came streaming down, leaving everyone drenched in the downpour.
