He said 18 unapproved hotels were identified at Mirissa while 17 were found in Negombo. “The beaches and the coastline are public property and also government property, therefore the hoteliers have no right to build on the coastline. The department will consider amendments to the act to strengthen the laws against unapproved hotels. There are only 100 field officers to examine illegal buildings on the coast, he said, adding that staffing should be increased.
