CH4 Global chief operating officer Alan Groves shows off the first batch of Asparagopsis powder, processed by Back Country Food in Invercargill. The seaweed farming project underway at CH4 Global’s Stewart Island operation aims to produce a powder supplement which even in small quantities would reduce livestock methane emissions by upwards of 90 per cent. The seaweed itself may have the secondary benefit of enabling expansion of the salmon farming industry by absorbing environmentally problematic quantities of fish urine.
