Rain denied England and India the chance of a result in the first Test of the five-match series as day five at Trent Bridge was a washout. India went into the final 52-1, needing a further 157 runs to win, an outcome which seemed more probable than the hosts getting the nine wickets they required. But neither side got the chance to push for victory on what could have been a grandstand final day, with play called off without a single ball being bowled. England had their captain Joe Root to thank for getting them in a position where victory was even possible heading into the final day. Root hit a wonderful 109 to lead England to 303 in their second innings and set India a target of 209.
