Ruling Awami League’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader has scoffed at the idea of BNP’s Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman being made the acting chief of the party. [This is] to allow corrupt people become the party’s leaders,” he added, referring to Tarique being made the acting chairperson of BNP. A Dhaka court on Thursday found BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, and four others guilty of embezzling money that came in as donations for orphans. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir later told the media that Tarique would serve as the acting chairperson as per the party charter. According to section C of Article 5 of BNP charter, party vice-chairman will perform as its acting chairman in absence of the party chairperson.
