A prisoner escaped through a 20cm high gap outside the Nelson Courthouse after a friend tried to pass him chocolate and diverted a guard's attention. On May 21 last year, Wilson appeared in the Nelson District Court facing a number of offences and was remanded in custody to reappear on June 11. He was held in the court cells and at 4.45pm that afternoon was being escorted to a police prison van in a secured caged area at the back of the court. He slid under a 20cm gap in the caged area, leaving officers stuck in the secure caged area.
