President Rodrigo Duterte assured the nation the government was “on top of the situation” as Typhoon “Ulysses” (international name: “Vamco”) battered parts of the country on Thursday morning. The President was apparently addressing criticism that the government was slow to respond to calamities such as typhoons. became a trending topic on Twitter as several residents waiting to be rescued at the height of Ulysses made their appeal online. The President had to leave the Asean summit so that he could focus on disaster response efforts. “More than two weeks ago, the Philippines was battered by Typhoon ‘Goni ‘ (‘Rolly’) — and if I must tell you, we are now suffering in the midst of the storm of Typhoon Ulysses.
