Premier League clubs 'to campaign to allow fans to drink in seats' on return to grounds

A law has been in place for 25 years that prohibits fans from consuming alcohol within sight of the pitch. The law also only allows for drink to be served 15 minutes either side of the game and at half-time. A chairman at one Premier League club said: "The ban actually encourages binge drinking, because you have fans trying to down three or four pints in an hour or less. Several Football League clubs have reportedly backed a pilot scheme, including Sunderland, Ipswich and Tranmere Rovers. But fans of British teams are still only able to drink in their seats in those competitions when attending away venues across Europe, where consuming alcohol in the stands is allowed.
