Powerful autofiction about growing up queer and an immigrant

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous takes the form of a letter from Little Dog to his mother Rose, an attempt to bridge the distance between them, to explain himself and his position in the world. Little Dog, in his late twenties, lives in New York. His mother Rose lives in Hartford, Conn., where she works in a nail salon, her English limited, unable to read her son’s work. Vuong approaches the material of his life in a series of feints and curves, elliptical insights and recurring motifs. There is no straightforward narrative line here, but a constantly shifting psychological, emotional and physical landscape.
