The lifeguard of Juno Beach: When French fishermen reel in Second World War ordnance, they call Erick Busnel

“When some guys say there is a mine on the beach, of course we know why there is a mine on the beach.”The beach is Juno Beach, a pivot point of the Second World War where Canadian troops landed in German-occupied France. We have our normal life, going to (work), being in the garden, doing the washing. The job now falls to Busnel and his team, which include women who work cleaning houses, a retired farmer and an ambulance driver. Busnel does not have relatives who fought in the war, but he has lived in the community where Juno Beach lies, Courseulles-sur-Mer, since he was 9 years old. His son in turn became a lifeguard, though he has since moved to Montreal to study at the École Polytechnique.
