In an article in TES, Stephen Petty, head of humanities at Lord Williams’s School in Thame, Oxfordshire, says people see a 4 as a 'Poundland Pass'. Grade 5 – while also technically a C grade (more on this later) – is deemed a 'Waitrose C', he suggests, and held in much higher esteem, despite the difference being only marginal in reality. 'Poundland Pass'(Image: Dan Kitwood)"Number five has done very well for itself, coming to be associated with wholesome healthy achievement," Stephen continues. Stephen is actually using Poundland and Waitrose to fight the very social tropes apparently reflected in DfE's new grading format.
