Pilot fire grows to nearly 7,000 acres, shuts down local schools

Both the Apple Valley and Hesperia unified school districts canceled classes Tuesday because of the fire, with Apple Valley citing poor air quality. A wildfire in the mountains of San Bernardino County grew to nearly 7,000 acres and shut down local schools Tuesday. Apple Valley schools are expected to reopen Wednesday. The Pilot fire has scorched 6,963 acres and is 6% contained, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Bob Poole. Hesperia Unified said it will continue to monitor the fire, but did not say when schools would reopen.
