Thompson signed for Liverpool from Shankly's former club Preston North End in 1963, and played at Anfield for the next decade. He made 416 appearances for the Reds to sit 24th on the club's all-time appearances list, scoring 54 goals. He left Liverpool for Bolton Wanderers in 1973 and won 16 England caps, narrowly missing out on the World Cup winning squad of 1966, and again in 1970.
