Today, the developer of PUBG specifically called out Epic Games’ Fortnite in a press release(! ), accusing the game of copying PUBG’s signature battle royale format, and the statement ends with a foreboding note about possible “further action” being taken against Epic. Its last-man-standing in a shrinking island zone concept was taken directly from the Japanese film Battle Royale, where the genre gets its name. They’re going to need to understand that they’re going to have competition in the space sooner or later, and threats and bluster won’t make that go away. Update: Epic Games: "No comment."
