A hearing seeking clarification to whether the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter is responsible for the ouvea premix being stored in Mataura begins in Invercargill on Monday. Court assisted mediation to determine who is responsible for the ouvea premix stored at a Mataura warehouse will begin in the Environment Court at Invercargill on Monday. The Environmental Defence Society has filed declaration proceedings concerning the storage of ouvea premix in the former paper mill building in Mataura. The ouvea premix is a byproduct of the aluminium dross produced at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter. The disclaimer meant disposing of the ouvea premix became the responsibility of a group of interested parties, including central and local government and the landlords of the storage sites.
