The Ottawa Police Service has opened a chief’s complaint against one of its own after an officer was accused of making racist online comments following the suspicious death of acclaimed Inuit artist Annie Pootoogook. The account also appears to have recently changed the last name to “Amebian,” however the URL attached to the Facebook account still contains Hrnchiar’s name. The Facebook account includes profile photos of Hrnchiar and an Ottawa Police Service badge. Reached by phone on Tuesday, Coburn, an Algonquin man, said the officer’s comments are “hostile and racist.”“They perpetuate these racist stereotypes,” Coburn said. As police continued to investigate Pootoogook’s death, they were asking the public to help them retrace her last steps.
