Both leaders’ chances of success depend on clearing obstacles thrown up by similar questions of what sort of market access, borders and security relations will operate outside an existing union. While Mrs May for now has a majority of Britons on her side, Scotland’s first minister must operate against the tide of Scottish opinion, however. While she can claim that most Scots opted to stay in the EU last June it remains an inconvenient fact that about a third of SNP voters chose Brexit. Ms Sturgeon must also navigate questions about negotiations to rejoin the EU.
